What Makes Cannabis Purple
ANTHOCYANINS!
Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid that is full of antioxidants, they are not only found in cannabis but also in other richly colored fruits and vegetables like eggplants, berries, grapes, red onions, violets and other plants as well! It’s important to note that the presence of anthocyanins doesn’t automatically guarantee that that vegetation will be purple, it just makes it a lot more likely. Cannabis plants with low levels of anthocyanins are more likely to produce yellow/gold leaves.
THE ROLE OF CHLOROPHYLL
Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green hue as they photosynthesize. As plants mature, they produce less chlorophyll and will turn yellow, red, and purple. Much like leaves during autumn, cannabis goes through a similar process!
Other factors that impact a strains color include temperature, pH level and acidity. When temperatures drop, reds, purples and blues are more likely to come out of the plant because chlorophyll production typically slows down as well. Research has shown that higher pH levels means that anthocyanin levels drop.
COLORS ARE MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN:
- Purple: Neutral pH environments
- Red + Pink: Typically occurs in acidic environments
- Yellow: Alkaline conditions
- Blue: Higher pH levels
