Jack Herer: Emperor of Hemp

You might just know the strain, but Jack Herer was a monumental figure in the cannabis space. A cannabis + hemp enthusiast and activist from the 1970’s to until his death in 2010, he was known as “The Hemporer.” He has a profound impact on the cannabis movement and was a must have at any cannabis convention. He wrote several books, including the infamous “Emperor Wears No Clothes” and worked hard to educate and change the public perception of cannabis and hemp.

THE EMPEROR WEARS NO CLOTHES
Jack was actually not interested in cannabis until after he was 30 years old. Once he tried it, he fell in love immediately and opened a smoked shop. In 1983 he was arrested for trespassing and refusing to leave a parking lot where he was collecting signatures to push for legalization. He had the option to pay a $5 ticket, but instead chose to sit in jail for 2 weeks. During that time is when he began to write his best selling book, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”

CANNABIS
He supported and promoted cannabis smoking and is quoted as saying “You gotta be out of your mind not to smoke dope. It’s the best thing the world has ever had!” Whether it was used recreationally or medicinally, Jack believed that everyone deserves access to cannabis and cannabis consumption. He ran for president in 1988 and 1992 as an independent and member of “The Grassroots Party.” In 1988 he gained 2000 votes and in 1992 he gained 4000 votes, but he gained a lot more attention to his activism and political goals.
HEMP
Jack supported the decriminalization of hemp as well. He loved hemp tie-dyed t-shirts. He saw hemp as an underutilized renewable resource that could be used in everyday life. Hemp could be used as construction material, food, textiles, paper, and even go so far as to replace fossil fuels! Fully aware of the benefits of hemp and how it could be a powerful tool to help fight climate change, he was a very vocal advocate for it and spoke out against the government for criminalizing the plant. Hemp can actually clean soil from chemicals and toxins! Leaving the soil cleaner than when it was planted.
JACK HERRER- STRAIN
He didn’t name his own strain! In the 1990’s weed breeders from the Netherlands created a strong sativa that gave consumers a blissful, euphoric, energetic and creative high. They wanted to honor him and the work he did to move the cannabis movement forward.
